Be

Be with how you feel, right in the moment.

Be with how you are, right in the moment.

Be with who are, right in the moment.

Humans have a lot of “shoulds,” ways we think we have to be if we’re to feel happy. But if you sink into to who you are in the moment, you find within your being the gifts you need to be happy. The Universe has already given them to you.

Greater than the Sum …

Greater than the Sum of Its PartsCombining Techniques:
Tutorial and Painting in Honor of Goddess Brigid

You can scroll past the tutorial for Product and Purchase Info. Click pics to see em full size and un-blurred.

I like to combine different techniques. Each technique or product has its strengths and weaknesses. Combining approaches provides more opportunities for self-expression.

This T-shirt is an example. What better than a piece honoring the multifaceted Goddess Brigid, the patron of hearth witches, healers, poets, metal smiths, and more?

Looking through my supplies, the only way to get a few of the colors I wanted was to blend Dye-Na-Flow. So I started the t-shirt with Dye-Na-Flow, blending some colors and using others as is.

The muddy beige lines in the following pic are a resist that provides a border to keep Dye-Na-Flow from spreading willy-nilly. This resist washes out.
Starting

Here’s the finished Dye-na-Flow—my first layer of creating the shirt—after it has dried, been set, then shirt washed to get out the resist. Ready for more painting:
FinishedDynaflow2

Next step: I drew with Jacquard’s Water-Based Silver resist. It has a lovely metallic quality:SilverResist2&3

If your efforts don’t result in what you envision, adding other techniques or products can bring the piece to life. Using various approaches helps a piece culminate. Example: Despite the T-shirt’s swirls of Dye-na-Flow and silver resist, adding blue lines finally made the windblown look I wanted. I used a fine point Tee Juice pen:
TJ2&3

I added others detail with green Tee Juice: On Brigid’s day (February 2), the wind blows cold but green buds may start to show.

After the TJ and silver resist dried, and I’d set them, I added Lumiere Super Sparkle to bring frost and snow to the wind:
Lumiere4&2

I wanted more wintryness = add another product. Mixed three Pearl Ex colors (into Jacquard’s Colorless Extender) for the color I wanted: a subtle and soft lavenderish pearl, which I applied and set.

Product and Purchase Info: Gildan Ultra Cotton XL men’s T-shirt, 100% cotton. Initialed and dated by artist. Hand washable. Free S & H. I only ship within the U.S. Purchase in my shop.

Original Faerie design. Trance painting. If this item calls you, grab it. I’m almost constitutionally incapable of repeating my designs.

Vision: Be the altar. Drape yourself in magic. This painting is in honor of Brigid, but you may see different magic in it, because all magics are related, all magics are one. Perhaps for you this is an ocean wind, a devotion to the Ice Queen, a year round ritual robe, a sacred garment to wear for healing, or…?

Frame, wear, or do both: Display on a rod slid through the arms—an easy, modern presentation to bless your home, and allowing you to quickly remove the shirt for wearing.

May My Shamanic Visions Not Diminish My Serving as a Shaman

imageMy visions are dear to me. They are more than ecstatic, they are also my life’s sustenance. But as amazing as I experience them to be, that is only my experience. Therefore, they must not imply rules for others. Visions—no matter how mystical and heartfelt—must not diminish my moment-to-moment mundane-vision regarding the actual needs of my clients and students, must not blunt my hearing to the needs they state (as opposed to my opinion of what they need). So I pray, “Spirit, may each thought regarding one of my students or clients—or even potential students and clients—focus on serving their needs, not on any grand agenda I might have regarding You. Spare me from false ego. Help me always see the best way to serve. Whether someone is suffering or on top of the world, show me how my services as a shaman can help them in their actual circumstance and mindset.”

Terror of Writing

Terror of Writing:
A Secret of Successful Authors

If you want to be a writer, but are too afraid, here is my suggestion:

No matter how terrified you are about writing, write anyway. Don’t respond to me with, “You don’t understand how scared I am, if you think I can write despite it.” Terror isn’t a block to writing (except, of course, now and then). If nothing else, write about your terror. Or write poorly if your terror gets in the way of better writing. Writers can be differentiated from non-writers by one simple fact: Writers write. Some of them talk about writing, some of them “process” their feelings about writing, and some do neither of these. But all writers write. They write despite their terror and, maybe, because of it.

My Wish for You on Christmas and All Days

My Wish for You on Christmas and All Days
A happy Christmas day to all. Whether you celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday, as a social holiday, or not at all, may the day be “merry and bright.” Whether you spend it with loved ones, alone, or with strangers, may the fellowship of humankind warm your spirit. May you feel the immense love the Divine has for you, feel it enfold you. May your joy, today and all days, be deep and real. May you know the jubilation of serving others. That is my wish for you today and for all your days, Francesca De Grandis

Faerie Woodland Altar Cloth

Detail of altar cloth—Francesca De Grandis

I’m posting this here instead of Etsy bc I’m so in love with it that I have to show more pics of it than Etsy allows and share my process a bit.

Click pics to see em full size and un-blurred.

You can skip process to get to Product and Purchase Info.

I am 99% sure this silk is 12 mm Crepe de Chine, it is gorgeous stuff! (It is a new scarf, but I accidentally discarded its label!) It was white until I used low-immersion dying to create a lyrically textured backdrop for my hand-painting. I cannot get good nuf shots to show the yummy rosy-beige and texture the dyeing provided, but it is kinda mottled.

This silk is luminous.

Starting the painting

See the pic below: I did the painting with a very fine paint brush—trance-painting. I went to a yum-yum world doing it.

Adding metallic paint

When almost finished painting, I was upset because I thought I might have to keep it for moi, bc it spoke so to me. But I often feel that way, then let go of the piece.

This thing is so long I couldn’t get a good full-length shot of it; this pic shows it across my sofa-bed; it will look great spread full out on a long altar or with its ends draping off the edge of a smaller altar.

Finally, I knew it’s not mine, and was ready to release it to its owner, whoever that might be! I’m happy it has so much magic I can send into the world. I will take even more joy in this altar-cloth knowing it is in someone’s home. And I do not have room to HOARD MY ART, LOL! Plus, I need to earn my living.

Part of the altar cloth. Do you need an altarcloth that will lend beauty, grace, and Faerie magic to any altar or ritual?

I can let go of this piece, I can let go of this piece . . . Oh, it is often hard to let my art go! Heh, when setting the dye I painted with, I was tempted to keep the piece again. But it doesn’t belong to me, I’m only its creator, it belongs to someone else, I know.

Product and Purchase Info: Update: This item has sold. (That is why there is no longer a PayPal button on the page.) But for the record: $129, plus $4 S & H. 100% silk, 66 X 13.” I am 99% sure it is 12 mm Crepe de Chine. OOAK, original design, painted freehand, initialed and dated by artist. Hand washable. If this item calls you, grab it. I’m almost constitutionally incapable of repeating my designs.

I can only ship within the U.S. And guess what?  I made a purchase button, I made a purchase button, I am so proud of me! Now when I want to share my process with friends, I don’t have to post half of it all over again on Etsy.

Update: This item has sold. (That is why there is no longer a PayPal button on the page.)

Thanks, everyone, who “liked” this project on Facebook while I worked on it!

Sacrifice, Not Self-Hate

Christ asked that each of us make sacrifices to serve others, not that we crucify ourselves on a cross of self-hate. When loathing yourself—for example, insisting that your actions are never good enough—you are self-involved. Your pain may be so immense and deeply rooted in abuse from others that you do not see self-hate as self-involvement. I am not trying to make you feel even worse about yourself; healing the agony of self-hate can require years of work and many different tools; have compassion for yourself about your suffering and how difficult it might be to overcome. And one of the many solutions needed for moving past self-hate is to reach past self-involvement—reach past yourself, outside yourself—to serve others. This will not take the place of other methods that you yourself need to see your own beauty—e.g., finding your self-hate’s origin. But no method replaces reaching out past self to serve. And, ultimately, your healing may never be complete without self-sacrifice. This solution tends to make no sense, especially to someone who has made unhealthy sacrifices in the name of service. Unhealthy sacrifice is self-involvement. Reach.
